Before you search for products, build a store, or run ads, you need to understand what dropshipping actually is and how the business operates.

People often enter e-commerce after seeing big sales screenshots or videos promising fast money. Successful stores exist, but dropshipping is not a shortcut to guaranteed income — it's a business model. Like any business, your results depend on your product, marketing, understanding of customers, numbers, suppliers, store, and execution.

1. What is dropshipping?

Dropshipping is a fulfilment model where a store sells products without holding its own inventory. Instead, a supplier holds the stock. The flow looks like this:

Customer → Your Store → Supplier → Customer

A customer buys from your store and pays your price. You then order from your supplier, who ships directly to the customer. You own the business and customer experience; the supplier handles much of the physical fulfilment. This is attractive because you don't need to buy hundreds of units before knowing whether customers want the product — but it still has costs and risks: website, software, samples, marketing, payment processing, and refunds.

2. A simple example

Supplier price R150, shipping R70, and you sell for R499. It looks like R499 − R150 = R349 profit, but that isn't your real profit. Consider all costs:

Selling price: R499
Product: −R150
Shipping: −R70
Payment fees: −R15
Advertising: −R120
Other: −R20

Estimated remaining profit: R124.

Revenue is not profit. A store doing R100,000 in sales is not making R100,000 in profit. Always separate revenue, costs, and profit.

3. The four main parts of the business

The product — customers must actually want it, for a clear reason: it solves a problem, saves time, improves appearance, or fulfils a desire. Trending isn't the same as viable.

The store — where the customer decides to buy. It must answer: what is this, why do I want it, how does it work, can I trust you, what does it cost, how long is delivery, and what if something goes wrong.

Marketing — how you put your offer in front of customers: TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, Meta/TikTok ads, Google, influencers, UGC, organic content, search, email. Match the product to the right traffic source.

Fulfilment — getting the product to the customer: order info, picking, packaging, shipping, tracking. A business doesn't end at 'Buy' — you must deliver what was promised.

4. What you're actually building

A beginner thinks 'I need a product to put on Shopify.' A business owner thinks 'I need to identify a customer, understand their problem, find the right product, create a compelling offer, acquire customers profitably, fulfil orders, and build a system that keeps operating.' The product is only one piece.

5. Dropshipping is not a 'free business'

Lower inventory requirement doesn't mean zero cost. Expect costs like Shopify, a domain, apps, advertising, samples, content, payment processing, shipping, chargebacks, customer service, and taxes where applicable. Approach it with a proper budget.

6. Why people choose dropshipping

Lower inventory commitment, easier product testing, location flexibility, and scalability — but scaling brings more orders, support, refunds, and operational complexity.

7. The downsides

Less control over fulfilment, variable shipping times, competition that raises ad costs, refunds and complaints (the customer bought from you), and advertising risk. More spend does not automatically mean more profit.

8. The importance of your offer

Two stores can sell the same product with completely different results, because the product isn't the whole offer. Your offer includes price, branding, presentation, guarantee, shipping, service, bonuses, bundles, discounts, social proof, and marketing angle. Learning to sell matters as much as finding products.

9. Customers come first

Don't ask 'what product should I sell?' Ask 'who am I selling to, and what do they want?' Understand who they are, what they want, what frustrates them, what they already use, their alternatives, and their objections.

10. The importance of testing

Nobody can guarantee a product succeeds. Testing gathers information: products, prices, ads, hooks, audiences, landing pages, offers. If something fails, ask what was wrong — product, ad, offer, site, price, targeting, or simply not enough data.

11. Don't chase 'winning products'

A product that wins for one store can fail for another, or work today and not in six months. There's no magic list. Learn to evaluate opportunities yourself — that skill is far more valuable.

12. The goal isn't just your first sale

Your first sale is exciting, but one sale doesn't prove you've built a successful business. Keep building the system.
